As if we couldn’t be more fucked, with H1N1 and war and whatnot, OH HEY there’s a new strain of HIV!

Wonderful. No, I’m not trying to me sarcastic here. Actually this new strain could provide us with much more information to finding a cure to HIV. Thankfully, there has been no trace of AIDS in the Cameroon woman where this new strain was found. Apparently this HIV strain is closely related to the simian virus in gorillas (contrary to the ones we already know, found in chimpanzees). Not only is this interesting news, but when the 62 year-old woman moved to Paris in 2004, she had had no contact to infected meat or apes. The virus seems to be well adapted to humans already, so we can probably conclude that many more people have it, especially in Cameroon.

Hopefully they find a cure. Fast.

Okay lets think about this. I know they say that the only way to cure your fear is to experience it, but many people take drastic measures and only get even more scared.

Spiders aren’t out to get you. Watching that movie didn’t help because it portrayed the spiders as evil and harmful when they really aren’t (unless you provoke them first).

You need to take baby steps. Take a walk outside and when you see a spider stop and look at it. Maybe stand 3 feet away so you feel safe. Don’t kill it, just observe. Calm yourself down. It won’t hurt you. Move out of the way if you think its coming towards you. Stop near a spiderweb. Observe. Continue to do this until you feel comfortable around spiders. If you see a spider in your house trap it in a cup or something and let it free.

Once you feel comfortable with all of this, tackle something bigger like touching a spider. I’ve had a pleasant experience with daddy long legs (aka Harvest Spiders), specifically because they do not contain venom glands. Also, in the rare event that they bit you, it would penetrate about 0.1 mm of your skin. You couldn’t even feel that, even if you tried. I picked one up and just let it walk in my hands for a few minutes. It tickled, and I slowly lowered my hand so it could continue to walk in the grass. I only recommend picking up the Harvest Spider because it has distinct features that you can recognize, and it will prevent you from picking up the wrong spider (aka one that bites or has venom)

I have absolutely no fear of spiders now, in fact after handling a very friendly tarantula I’m considering getting one too! They are interesting creatures, and the ones around your house are probably more beneficial (killing pests and venomous spiders) than harmful.

Moral of the story? Whatever fear you have, face it. Don’t be afraid. Take baby steps. If your fear is inevitable (like fear of death) then let it be. Cherish life while you can. Carpe diem, you only live once! Why would you spend time worrying over things when you can be out enjoying the world?’
